Light Up 13-Layer Remains

An unusual lighting design for the sublime “13-Layer Remains” landmark in Taiwan, this work aims at rejuvenating the old copper smelter plant, which was shut down in the 1970s. Dating back to the Japanese colonial era and also known as the “Potala Palace of Mountain Mines” because of its monumental architecture, the remains of this impressive building were enhanced with 365 sets of luminaires at 15 different angles. Clearly visible from afar, the illumination stages the cultural heritage in an impressive shimmer, whose enveloping amber-coloured light symbolises the fire in copper refining. The various luminance levels, in turn, stand for the individual layers of the rising terrain and, as a whole, transform the building illuminated at night into a great public work of art that resonates warmly with people, while the memory of the mining golden age is rekindled.
